Poetry
The picture shows this old two page hand written Poem Entitled "OUR BABY". The pages are connected but were scanned seperately. This poem is not signed or dated but is was purchased in a box of old papers from the 1890's to the 1930's. The poem is sad in that it was written after the death of a baby. It also resembles a prayer. I am not trying to be morbid or disrespectful. It is not something I would normally offer up for auction, but I felt that someone may appreciate it. It is neatly written in a very fine pen. It is on lined paper with an embossed acorn at the top left corner. The scan is unreadable, so I will type the poem below here. It reads:

Our Baby
Today we cut the fragrant sod,
With trembling hands asunder,
And lay this well beloved of God,
Our dear dead baby, under. O hearts that ache, and ache afresh! O tears too blindly raining! Our hearts are weak yet, being flesh,
Too strong for our restraining. Sleep, darling, sleep! Cold rain shall steep
Thy little turf made dwelling. Thou wilt not know so far below
What winds our storms are swelling;
And birds shall sing in the warm spring
And flowers bloom about thee;
Thou wilt not heed them love, but oh
The loneliness without thee. Father, we will be comforted
Thou wast the gracious giver. We yield her up - not dead not dead,
To dwell with thee forever! Take thou our child! ours for a day,
e while the ages blossom
This little shinning head we lay,
In the Redeemers bosom!

Each page measures about 5" x 8". It is in excellent condition, but does have a small tear on the second page that can be seen in the scan below.
