Juvenile   Child   Children   Coloring Book   Paint   Painting   Art   Artist   Book   Brownies
The picture shows views of this ©1908 Juvenile Painting Gallery Hard Cover Book. Shown is the cover an example of one of the color pages, another color page and the sme colored by a child. This book is by F. I. Wetherbee and was published by M. A. Donohue & Company of Chicago, Illinois. The book has Introduction and Direction pages, different pages of drawing instructions, and pages to color with paint, crayons, or pencil.

The coloring pages consist of one page with printed colors and the child is to copy the colors onto an uncolored page. See the two bottom pictures below. There are (32) pairs of these coloring pages. The coloring pages have images of a Brownie character, Teddy Bear, Clown, Rabbits, Archer with bow and arrows, Winter scene with boy, girl, & dog, girl with begging dog, Children playing Soldiers with swords & gun, Arab on camel, Robin in cherry tree, daffodil flowers, roses, pansies, cherries and plums on branches, daisies, young girls in different dresses, boy and girl fishing with net, finch or canary birds, seashore scene, boy and girl feeding a horse, Dutch children by sea with sailboats and windmill, Robinson Crusoe on shore with parrot, fruit, comic man with horn and marching animals, scarlet tanager bird, Sailor & young lady in rowboat, Bear, Fairy, Turkish man, peasant girl, clown, Dutch boys with dog, young girl gardening, grapes on vine, meadow lark bird, boy and girl lighting fireworks, boy and young man apple picking, and a cow with chickens.

There are several blank pages that have an old picture and news articles pasted like a scrap book. One is a military war scene, one about a whale in Eastport, Maine, one of an ancient Garrison in Dover, New Hampshire, and one titles ''Constitution and Guerriere''.

The many color pages are framable. The book measures 9-1/2'' x 7-1/4''. It is in good condition with neatly child colored pages and some penciling in the drawing section. There is over all wear from use. Written by a child in the front and back are the following:

1910 Falls I Lyford Hutchins

Lyford from Daddy 1910
Wolfboro Falls, N.H.

For reference, the following message had been sent to us concerning this book:

''Just thought you might like to know that the little child who once owned the book labelled as ''©1908 Juvenile Painting Gallery Hard Cover Book'' in your online shop was a Harvard graduated lawyer, who was also a war hero. U.S. Marine Lt. Col. Lydord Hutchins, originally of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, died September 7th, 1990, at the age of 86 (which means he would have been 4 years old when the book was actually published). Col. Hutchins served in no less than 3 wars, and was on active duty from 1942 - 1974. It was during World War II, when he was a forward air controller, that he was decorated with the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. Just goes to show, these things with history, some of them have quite a story to tell!''

I left a message on the Lyford family genealogy forum that you have the book, along with the information where to look for it.

Sincerely,
Linda Talley
