The pictures below show a larger front and back view of all (8) Old Perfection Cigarettes Advertising Premium Celluloid Pin Back Buttons in this lot. One of these pinback buttons is dated 1896. They are believed to be from the late 1800s or early 1900s. They were used as a premium from Perfection Cigarettes.

They appear to be from different sets with a couple different paper inserts. The gray back one (lower right) is from The Whitehead & Hoag Company, and the white backs are from The Phelps & Sons Manufacturing Company. Both companies were from Newark, New Jersey. Two pins are missing the back paper, but these were all found together. The paper inserts are marked as follows:

(gray)
PERFECTION CIGARETTES
FACTORY NO. 42
4th DISTRICT N.C.
THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO.
NEWARK, N.J.
PATENTED JULY 21, 1896

(white)
PERFECTION CIGARETTES
FACTORY NO. 42
4th DISTRICT N.C.
PHELPS & SONS MFG. CO.
NEWARK, N.J.

We do not know how many are in the complete sets. Each of these pinback buttons have an saying from the Victorian period. The center one pictures a comic or cartoon man with his hand out to shake. In the order pictured, they are marked as follows:

I'M THE GUY
THAT PUT SAND
IN SANDUSKY

I'M THE GUY
THAT PUT STRINGS
IN STRING BEANS

I'M THE GUY
THAT PUT THE LIME
IN THE LIMELIGHT

HELLO BILL

I'M THE GUY
THAT PUT THE MAN
IN MANHATTAN

COME ACROSS

AW, CAN IT

BELIEVE ME

All of these for one price! The pinback buttons each measure 7/8'' wide. They appear to range from good to mint condition as pictured. The bottom right pin has cracking in the celluloid and there are two missing paper inserts as shown and mentioned above.
