Portugal   Portuguese   I.D.E.S.   Fraternal   Organization   Religion   Religious   Advertising   Pin Back Button
The picture shows a view of the (2) Colorful Old I.D.E.S. Religious Pin Back Buttons in this lot. ''I.D.E.S.'' stands for ''Irmandade Do Divino Espirito Santo'' in Portuguese, which translated in English as ''Brotherhood of The Espirito Santo The Holy Ghost''. These fraternal type organization pinback buttons are not dated but they are believed to be from the 1800s or early 1900s. The fronts of these are identical with an image of a wreath, a crown, and a dove. The right one pictured has a paper insert in the back with advertising and a union marking. The left one does not have an insert. It is marked on the two sides as follows:

I.D.E.S.
(insert)
WALTER N. BRUNT
880 MISSION ST.
SAN FRANCISCO, CAL.
BADGES, BANNERS, LAPEL BUTTONS, PRINTING

The pin back buttons each measures 1-1/4'' wide. They appear to be in good condition with some surface cracking and a few small spots as pictured. As mentioned above the left one does not have the paper backing. Below here, for reference, is some additional information:

A Portuguese American Fraternal Benefit Society, receiving members of all Nationalities, established in the State of California in 1889 to assist Widows and Orphans. Council Hayward #14 was organized on April 23, 1898 by Founder and first President, J. D. Oliveira, also the donator of the site of the present day I.D.E.S Hall Located at 1105 ''C'' Street.

The public in general is invited to attend our social functions, which include 3 crab dinners and dances sponsored annually, weekly Friday night dinners, a Christmas pot luck which always includes preparing food baskets for FESCO, (Family Emergency Shelter) Council 14 has also assisted the Tsunami victims, flood disaster victims, earthquake victims in the Azores, as well as many other charitable cause.

I.D.E.S. offers various membership plans, scholarships for deserving students, and social membership for Seniors 60+. Council 14 main event of the year is held on the weekend of Father's Day each year, which includes a downtown parade with marching bands, queens in lavish capes, and entertainment for all ages, culminating with a free meal served to all, maintaining the cultural tradition for Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal.
