The pictures show a front and back view of this Elaborate 1889 Girls Competitive Drill Team First Prize Award Medal. This is a multi part and multi layer metal medal. It has not been tested but it is believed to be gold plated. It was difficult to photograph it with all of its highly reflective surfaces. We have had, and offered many old medals for sale, but this one is one of the best ones that we have ever made available. All of the parts are very nicely engraved. It is believed to be from a Boston, Massachusetts area high school.

At the top is a nicely designed fancy pin section that is engraved in Old English lettering. There is a heavy solid pin mounted on the back. Hanging from it are two chains connected to a section with an eagle with a shield, crossed rifles and a banner. These are also engraved. below it are two more chains that are connected to a larger medal section. This section has four layers. It has a backing section, a wreath section, an engraved plate area, and a monogram in the center.

This elaborate medal is marked on its various parts and on the back of the pin section as follows:

J. ESTELLE STEVENSON
'89
APR. 25th
GIRLS COMPETITIVE DRILL
FIRST PRIZE
EBHS (monogram) (East Boston High School ?)

JOHN HARRIOTT
BOSTON

Miss J. Estelle Stevenson was the 1st Sergeant of Company Y. Since listing this medal we have located a small hand written laminated paper that identifies the medal and it will be included with it. The medal measures about 2-5/16'' x 4-7/8''. It appears to be in excellent condition. It looks like there may have been an old repair that was made where the eagle is connected to the two rifles as pictured. It appears to be a professional jeweler repair but it left a darkened area from the heat. This can most likely be polished.
