| | | | The picture shows a view of this Old Enameled S. S. Kenya Castle Cruise Ship Advertising Souvenir Scoop Spoon. Also shown is an old post card of the ship that the spoon is from. The postcard is not included. It is only shown for reference. The year that the spoon was made or sold is unknown but it is old. The spoon appears to be chrome and it has an enameled brass emblem section. The emblem has a flag and the ship's name. There are no other markings. The spoon measures 2-1/2'' long. It is in excellent condition. Below here is some background reference information that was found online about the ship: ''The Kenya Castle'' ''Launched on 21 June 1951, the Kenya Castle was built for the Africa service of the Union-Castle Line. She was the second of three sisters built in 1951-52, the others being Rhodesia and Braemar Castle. She continued in this role until 1967 when she was purchased by Chandris and renamed Amerikanis who intended her for summer Atlantic service. However, this was a dwindling market due to competition from the jet aircraft, although in 1968 she entered service for Chandris, initially on cruising from New York, and later sailing in Europe and the Caribbean. She was briefly chartered to Costa Line in the early 1980's but reverted back to Chandris in 1984. She was supposed to be brought to South Africa for a series of cruises in 1994, however, this never happened. An attempt was even made to market the ship as a time share in South Africa in 1995, fortunately sanity prevailed and this too never came to pass. She was laid up in 1999 and finally in early June of 2001 she arrived at Alang for breaking up.'' |
