Carpenter   Woodworker   Patent   Coin   Token
The picture shows a close view of both sides of this 1834 Woodworth's Patent Planing Machine Massachusetts Advertising Hard Times Token. As I understand it, there were times in the 1800's when there was a shortage of metals for minting coins. Many businesses had minted their own and took advantage of this opportunity to advertise on them. This coin is believed to have had a value of one cent. It is made of copper and pictures a patented wood planing machine. On one side it reads:

WOODWORTH'S PATENT PLANING MACHINE
MADE BY
S. B. SCHENCK
ATTLEBORO
MASS. (Massachusetts)

The other side reads:

THIS MACHINE IS CAPABLE OF
PLANING,
TONGING,
GROOVING,
OR JOINTING,
OR RABBITING,
18 FEET OF BOARDS
OR PLANK IN A
MINUTE
1834

The coin measures 1-1/8" across and it is in very good condition with all wording being readable.
