1800s United States Company Advertising Hard Times Token
United States   History   Historical   Advertising   Hard Times   Token   Coin   Coinage   Boston   Massachusetts
The picture shows a view of both sides of this 1800s United States Company Advertising Hard Times Token. In the mid 1800s were times when metals for coinage was scarce many private companies had minted their own. The coin is copper and is believed to have been used in the place of a large U.S. cent. One side of this coin has an image of a ladies fancy hair comb with leaves in the center. This side reads:

ALFRED WILLARD
149 WASHINGTON ST.
BOSTON

The other side reads as follows:

IMPORTER OF JEWELRY,
FANCY GOODS, CUTLERY & o
BRUSHES, PERFUMERY, COMBS & o
BY WHOLESALE OR RETAIL

It measures 1-1/8" wide. It is dark but it is in excellent condition as pictured.
