The pictures below show larger front and back view of this Colorful Old Tobacco Advertising Premium Felt or Flannel Country Flag Quilt with 37 Flags. The quilt is more colorful then pictured. It appears bright because of the sunlight when the first photograph was taken. These flags are not dated but they are believed to be from the late 1800s or the early 1900s. Many tobacco companies gave these away as premiums with their cigarettes, cigars, or other tobacco products. There were many different sets of silks, flannels, flags, felts, blankets, and carpets that were used with all kinds of designs. The flags came in different sizes as well. Women were encouraged to collect these and make useful and beautiful items out of them including, pillows, blankets, quilts, curtains, and more. The manufacturers, and the cigarette or cigar brands that these were used in are unknown. There are some duplicate flags on this quilt. The countries that are included here are as follows: (Larger Flags) (about 28'' x 15'' each) Great Britain Ireland Mexico Greece United States of America (48 star) Zion France United States of America (48 star) France Greece United States of America (48 star) Scotland Germany Italy Germany (Smaller Flags) (about 7-1/2'' x 5'' each) Greece Japan Honduras Belgium Brazil Burmah Corea Nicaragua France France Japan Austria Greece England Uruguay Turkey Paraguay Columbia Bulgaria Switzerland Scotland The back of the sewn quilt is also shown as well as a closer view of the colorful repeated design, with flowers, leaves, birds, lattice or trellis, and trees. The entire quilt measures about 83'' x 88'' (6' 11'' x 7' 4''). The larger flags each measure about 28'' x 15'', and the smaller ones each measure about 7-1/2'' x 5''. The quilt has probably been safely packed away since it was made. It appears to be in near mint to mint condition as pictured. We have never seen one as nice before, and we have not seen flags any where near as large as these either. There are some duplicate flags as mentioned above, and one small French flag (top right) was sewn on backwards. |
