The picture below shows three larger views of this Old Nautical Sailing Ship & Compass Metal Novelty Match Box Holder. This metal match box holder is not dated but it is old. It has the same ship image that was on several items that we had sold from the Hudson – Fulton Celebration that took place in 1909 in New York. One side has this sailing ship at sea under full sail with a full moon in the background. The other side has a compass image. The edge looks like a book binding edge and it is marked “MADE IN U.S.A.”. The ends are open to open a match box that would be inside. One of the side edges is open to use the match box striker that would be on the side. It appears to be made of brass. There is no maker's mark and the maker is unknown. The match box holder measures 1-5/8'' x 1-1/8'' x 1/2''. It appears to be in excellent condition with an aged patina as pictured. It could be polished if desired, but that will be up to the buyer to decide.
