| | | The pictures shows a view of the 1946 Dutch West Indies War Relief Letter and Response letter in this lot. Shown is the two sided hand written letter, the cover, and the typed response letter. The envelope has a Curacao postage stamp and a 1946 Curacao postmark. The interesting letter was written in vert broken English by a ''very poor'' girl from St. Johns, Saba, Dutch West Indies to the American Mills Permoflex Plant of New Haven, Connecticut. Basically she is pleading with the company to send her any remnants of cloth that they could to make needed clothing because she had no money to buy any. She had included with her letter her ladies handkerchief in exchange. The Production Manager had written back a sympathetic letter. He had explained that they are not manufacturers of cloth. They did make elastic web and mailed her some, as well as the return of her handkerchief. To judge the sizes the envelope measures 6-1/2'' x 3-5/8''. Both letters are in excellent condition with some age discoloration as pictured. |
