The picture shows a close view of both sides of this 1837 E. F. SISE & CO. New Hampshire Advertising Hard Times Token. As I understand it, there were times in the 1800's when there was a shortage of metals for minting coins. Many businesses had minted their own and took advantage of this opportunity to advertise on them. This coin is believed to have had a value of one cent. It is made of copper. On one side it reads:

E. F. SISE & CO.
GENERAL
COMMISION
AND FORWARDING
MERCHANTS
PORTSMOUTH
N. H.

The other side reads:

IMPORTERS
OF
CROCKERY
AND
GLASSWARE
DEALERS
IN
COAL
1837

The coin measures 1-1/8" across and it is in excellent condition with all wording being readable.
