| | | The picture shows a view of both sides of this 1961 Ware Massachusetts Bicentennial Bronze Commemorative Medal Coin. This medal or coin appears to be made of bronze. It was from the 200th anniversary or bicentennial celebration (1761 - 1961). One side features a Native American Indian spear fishing salmon. ''The actual origin of the name, Ware, is thought to be derived from a translation of the Native American word "Nenameseck," meaning fishing weir (pronounced Ware). The weirs were used to capture salmon that were once abundant in New England waterways.'' The other side has a torch, wreath, leaves, and a banner and is marked as follows: 1761 - 1961 200th ANNIVERSARY WARE, MASS, This medal or coin measures 1-1/2'' wide. It appears to be in near mint condition as pictured. |
