| | | | The picture shows a view of this Old Ceramic Silent Woman Restaurant & Bar Advertising Cigarette Ash Tray. The back side is blank. From what we understand, the restaurant that was in Waterville Maine closed in the 1980s after several decades of being in business. Apparently there was some pressure from woman's groups or a women's movement because of the demeaning logo and business name. The ashtray is imprinted in brown or dark maroon on white glazed ceramic. The logo in the center of this ashtray features a headless woman servant, waitress, or barmaid with a serving tray. To one side are three flowers and the other side there are three sets of forks and spoons. It is marked as follows: THE SILENT WOMAN
WATERVILLE IN MAINE The ashtray measures about 6'' wide and it has slots all around for many cigarettes or cigars. It appears to be in excellent condition with age crazing as pictured. |
