The chain may be silver but it is not marked and has not been tested. The medal appears to be silver plated copper. The front of the medal has Christopher Columbus, a Massachusetts State Seal Emblem, two American flags, two sailing ships, an ocean liner ship, an early airplane, and the years ''1492 - 1911''. The back has an image of a wreath, ribbon, torch, leaves, and the years "1492 - 1911". The back also reads: COLUMBUS DAY
