| | | The picture shows a view of this Old United States Navy Sailor Homefront Signed Certificate. This old certificate is not dated but it is old. It is unknown if it was from World War I or World War II. In WWII there were Service Star flags that were used. We have not seen this type before. The certificate is a sign that would hang in a home or store front window indicating that someone from that household was in the United States Navy. There is a red, white, and blue string at the top to hang it. Apparently these were given out by the Recruiting Office after you had signed up for service. At the top is an old United States of America Navy Department logo or emblem with an eagle, flag, banners, and emblem. There is a red seal with a number as well that could be used to research the Sailor who had owned this certificate. It is marked as follows: A MAN FROM THIS HOUSE IS NOW SERVING HIS COUNTRY AT THE FRONT IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY 121655 (signed) NRA ROONEY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER, U.S.N., COMMANDING U.S. NAVY RECRUITING STATION 495 CONGRESS ST., PORTLAND, ME. The certificate was found in an old frame but it was destroyed. It measures 10-1/4'' x 8''. It is in good condition with some wear as pictured. |
