The pictures below show larger views of this Automatic Toy Company Hopalong Cassidy Mechanical Tin Toy Shooting Gallery. The first picture shows the lithographed tin wind up toy and part of the box top and one side. The box bottom is included, what is left of the box top and only pieces of the box sides. The second and third pictures show the top and bottom sections of the toy. The shooting Gallery is not dated but it is believed to be from the early 1950s.

The top section winds up and the motor drives a band that has Riders on horses and a Stage Coach targets with numbers that go around and stand up. The key wind (works very well) is on the back and there is a lever (also works very well) to turn it on, and off is inside the back section. The spring loaded, cannon looking gun, swivels at the base to aim at the bad guys, outlaws, or lawbreakers. There are instructions above the gun (see below). After loading you pull the red ball section back and fire! It fires small steel metal ball bearings (at least 25 are included). There are three riders on horses, and a stage coach with horses to fire the gun at. When hit, they fall over, and come back up the next time they come around.

The top (or back) and the bottom (or front sections are hinged, and it is made to be folded to put in a box or a drawer, or on a shelf, for storage. The colorful lithography is all over the front, and on the inside of the back section with images of buildings, cactus, plants, cattle skull, rocks, a wagon wheel, and men including “HOPPY”, “LUCKY”, and “CALIFORNIA” firing their guns. There are three colorful Western Cowboys including Hoppy. The tin toy is marked in different locations as follows:

The shooting gallery measures about 18-1/2'' x 14'' x 17-1/4''. It appears to be very clean, in working order, and in excellent condition as pictured. Parents probably took it away from the kids worried that they’d “put their eyes out!” As mentioned above, what is left of the box is not so good. The plain bottom is here. Most of the top is here with wear, and only some parts of the sides are here in pieces.
